The African Caribbean Center did a great job organizing a movie projection of The Color Purple and an award ceremony Thursday, February 1st, 2024, to recognize outstanding female leaders who have significantly contributed to the ACCoCA mission and vision for community development. This event welcomed close to 200 participants, together with Red Deer dignitaries.
Guests were invited into a sumptuously decorated room, evoking the magical atmosphere of the Cinema.
The event began with a dazzling red carpet, where guests arrived dressed in their finest, evoking color purple elegance. An atmosphere of glamour and excitement pervaded the air as guests mingled and greeted each other under the spotlight.
The MC launched the event by acknowledging the presence of all and the great job done by Executive Director Zainab Mohamoud and the members in organizing the event. She later explained the aim of the event while announcing ACCoCA’s upcoming events: The Raising event to be held on February 23 to assist the recent African Immigrants impacted by layoff, the Black History Month and the Afro- Caribbean Festival to be held from August 17 to 18, 2024. Also, there is reading for youth and children which partners with the downtown library and the RCMP detachment on four Saturdays to celebrate Black History Month in February.
Attention was then turned to the awards ceremony. Sparkling trophies were awarded to outstanding leaders who have significantly impacted Red Deer, Alberta and Canada in the general community. The evening ended with a screening of THE COLOR PURPLE MOVIE
Special thanks to all the sponsors, partners, awards beneficiaries and participants for their support.
My appreciation goes out to the organizing committee for the excellent job done and our African immigrant volunteers.
- Zainab Mohamoud
